Moggollon Mining and Timber co. is an operating railroad museum in the present day, Northern Az. high country. The timber and minerals- manganese and onyx- are cut and mined with modern equipment. However they are then reloaded on railcars and eased down the mountain to the lumber mill near Meteor Crater and the BNSF interchange at Canyon Diablo. Geared and articulated locos still rule the road and the steam powered tourist trains take railfans out to see it all on 100 plus miles of trackage. For over 80 yrs. various logging RRs operated in the vast Ponderosa Pine Forests of Northern Az.. The last Log train into the Flagstaff Mill was pulled by steam on 8/17/1966, my Granddad Eddy Eyrich was firing The little 1911 2-8-0 (The 2Spot) that had spent her entire life pulling and pushing God alone knows how many millions of board feet of Timber into the various mills she served in Flagstaff. She's now on Display Downtown on Rte.66.(My 2Spot is a close replica of how the real 2spot looked around 1950. I started with an inexpensive 0-8-0.) The #12 a Baldwin 2-6-6-2 is Displyed in front of the Pioneers Hist. Museum on Fort Valley Rd. (hwy. 180) Here in Flagstaff.
I started building my MM&T layout in mid February of 2003 after recieving a 3 trk. shay as a Christmas gift. I proceeded to build a wood bunker for it and letter it for the Peckerwood Hill Timber Co. (Peckerwood Hill is a small cinder cone near Happy Jack Az. where my dad used to work in the logging ind. His hobby is cutting firewood so "his" loco had to be a woodburner.)When I showed it to someone they said "Now you need a place to run it." One thing led to another and, now it has taken over my bedroom where I still sleep.

Most of the lumber and Woodgrain laminate facia was salvaged from an old pressboard entertainment center. Scenery is made of blue foam bought in 4x8 sheets in 1", 1 1/2' and 2" thicknesses cut, carved, glued in layers then covered in a thin coat of plaster and painted with acrylic washes. Ballast, Soil, Rocks etc. are collected from the areas modeled. All scenery comes apart in sections so I can salvage most or all of it when I move. My conifers are made with balsa trunks and foliage consisting of pieces of plastic and silk ferns of various types bought at craft stores. Most of my structures are scratchbuilt of balsa, Basswood, styrene and anything else You can think of. Some of my locos and rolling stock including the worlds only four truck Heisler are 20 to 40 yrs. old. Others have been bought since I started this present madness. It took me 2 days to brushpaint the walls sky blue after the 2 level layout was 90% complete in Godawful contortions under shelves and atop stools and ladders then 1 day to paint backdrop scenery and clouds. I DO NOT RECCOMEND THIS TO OTHERS! Try to do backdrop planning earlier.

My paternal Grandfather got me interested in logging RRs because He was A mechanic, machinist,Relief fireman and Engineer on the logging lines out of Flagstaff. My Dad Worked as Eqpt. shop super at Happy Jack Keeping the KW log trucks and other eqpt. running. Just like most prototype lines most of my locos and rolling stock are reworked to be unique and fit local needs. My layout is an around the wall, 2 level in a 12'x14' room plus the Pizmoore mine in a 2'x8' closet. It has a total of 5 1/2 scale miles of track. 35 #4 turnouts, a 12" turntable, staight DC control broken into 30 blocs and subblocs. Min. rad. is 18", Max. gradient is 8%. I'm now to the point that unless I tunnel into another room I can't lay any more track and still have room to sleep so I'm concentrating on adding more detail (basically all the junk that always accumulated around logging RRs) I hope you folks enjoy my pix even 1% of what I enjoy Building, PLAYING WITH and photographing my Mogollon Mining & Timber Co. layout. Update! As of 2007 I have tunneled into another room. track is laid and scenery progressing!

I've lived all of my life (40yrs.)here in Flagstaff and I've loved trains that entire time. Flagstaff is bisected by the BNSF mainline and currently 80-100+ trains pass thru each day. The city has always been too shortsighted to build other than 4 above or below grade level crossings and most of the 60,000 residents curse the grade level crossings. I put the vehicle in park and enjoy. They bitch the horns are too loud. If my subconscious doesn't hear them while I sleep I awake and Wonder where the derailment is. Watching 3-8 dash9s pulling mile long intermodals thru town is great but, I love steam. I also love more modern logging, mining and construction equipment. From these loves arose the premise of my MM&T. Logging railroads around here were a little different than in many other western areas. Most western loggers started from tidewater, a river or some other low spot and headed up and up. hauling strings of empties up the ridges and drainages. Then trying like hell to keep the loads from running away on the trip back down. But here on the southern edge of the Colorado Plateau, Base Elevation is near 7,000 feet. Above that volcanic features are built hundreds and thousands of feet higher, and drainages and canyons are carved hundreds and Thousands of feet lower. All of this Geography is covered in Ponderosa pine along with Douglas Fir, White Fir and etc. where favorable to those species. So the RRs that ventured out into the sticks tended to have a sawtooth profile.

My MM&T is fictional because I didn't want to be restricted by any of the local historical prototypes, but, all of the places are real. All of my life I have hunted, fished, driven, rode motorcycles and quads, ran, walked, and on more than one occasion staggered blind drunk around this Glorious landscape. To model it I had to compress, twist, skip, fudge, and swap directions at times to fit real geography into bedroom Geography. If I had a few mil. to spare and a medium size warehouse... In late 2006 I tunneled thru the closet wall into another bedroom and laid new rail, again in two levels. My layout is now DCC controlled and many of my steam loco's sound equipped. I needed mainline track near and hooked into my computer as I do DCC decoder installation and programming for a friend's commercial enterprise ("Litchfield Station" check out the website, great prices and service.) By doing installions for him I almost break even for all the DCC goodies I want. I've found DCC to be great. It allows me to have multiple trains doing all kind's of things at the same time without having to "play the piano" on toggle switches and multiple power packs. I've recently started scratchbuilding more and larger trees to improve the look of my "woods". Roger Eyrich
